Mission

Mission
Cornell Law School is committed to sustaining an academic community that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive: a school that welcomes persons of diverse personal identities as equal members who are valued and respected for their individual talents and abilities. Prejudice and discrimination are unacceptable on any basis.

The Cornell Law School Equity and Inclusion Alumni Leadership Council (CLS EI ALC) aims to model the reality of human diversity and the practice of equity and inclusion to the Cornell community, particularly to the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of Cornell Law School; and will foreground interests and concerns related to diversity, equity, and inclusion to the Dean of the Law School and members of the Law School Dean’s Advisory Council. As Cornell Law School alumni working variously in private and public legal practice, members of the CLS EI ALC will offer advice and guidance on legal education and the practice of law with respect to:

Diversity – a recognition that individuals differ in various ways, and a respectful tolerance of those differences that is civil, courteous, thoughtful, and humane. Human diversity occurs among individuals as well as among “identity” groups in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, and physical appearance. Our definition also includes diversity of thought: ideas, perspectives, and values.

Equity – the fair treatment of every person, particularly in terms of affording everyone equal access to roles and positions for which s/he/they qualify on the criteria of ability, and equal opportunity to thrive in those roles and to advance beyond them. Equity also means identifying and eliminating barriers that have prevented, and continue to prevent, the full participation of some persons and/or groups. Improving equity involves increasing justice and fairness within the procedures and processes of institutions or systems, as well as in their distribution of resources.

Inclusion – the project of building environments that welcome any individual or group, and which any individual or group can perceive as welcoming, i.e., a place in which everyone is respected, supported, valued, and invited to participate fully. An inclusive and welcoming space embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions for all people.
